Chris Rock hosted the BET Awards on Sunday, June 29, and no one was safe from the funny man’s onstage jibes.

Rock, 49, opened the awards show in Los Angeles, which he called “the black World Cup,” by joking about Solange and her notorious elevator incident with her sister Beyonce and Beyonce’s husband Jay Z.

“What happened in music this year?” Rock quipped. “Well, Solange had a fight with Jay Z in the elevator. That’s what happened this year.”

“You know what, Solange hit the right rapper,” the comedian continued. “She did, she hit the right rapper. Everybody is like, ‘I can’t believe Jay didn’t smack her!’ Well, Jay is a businessman now, he can’t just go punching girls in the face. He got a meeting with Nabisco in the morning!”

“She hitBlueprint 3Jay Z,” Rock added. “Cause Reasonable Doubt Jay Z… if she hitReasonable Doubt, that elevator would’ve been filled up with nothing but lipstick, blood, and weave. That’s music, baby.”

The actor went on to riff on disgraced NBA owner Donald Sterling. “The biggest news this year out of all black news was Donald Sterling,” Rock explained. “Now, let me get this straight. A 83-year-old white man doesn’t like black people. Is that news? Come on!”

“First of all, a black man couldn’t look him in the eye ’till he was 45,” he joked. “The first black man he ever met, he got for Christmas. And don’t make me defend Donald Sterling. What exactly did he say? What exactly did Donald Sterling say: ‘I don’t want my woman around black basketball players.’ Me neither! Are you kidding me? Who the hell wants their woman around black basketball players? And I’m specific to black ball players. I don’t care if my woman was with JJ Redick,Mike Dunleavy,David Lee, but if I see you with Serge Ibaka, we gotta talk.”

Later in the show, which included appearances byNicki Minaj,Iggy Azalea, andChris Brown, among others, Rock took a page out ofEllen DeGeneres’ book. During the 2014 Oscars, DeGeneres famously ordered pizza to the awards show, with a deliveryman handing out slices to the stars near the front row. Rock put a spin on her move, giving the audience at the BET Awards Roscoe’s House of Chicken and Waffles.

Other celebs who provided fodder for Rock included Rick Ross,Kerry Washington, andParis Hilton, of whom he said, “You’re getting your Kardashian on tonight!” and added when handing out the chicken and waffles, “Paris Hilton, you want to be black tonight, right? Here you go!”

After the snacks, Rock tweeted, “I had to give Paris Hilton some extra syrup for her chicken and waffles.”

The 37-year-old singer, who split from wife Patton, 38, in February after 9 years of marriage, sat at a grand piano, appearing visibly moved and at times pausing the song to wipe his nose after a snivel. “Forever Love,” a song from his new album Paula, left fans in no doubt as to his feelings.

“If you ever doubt it now, baby, I will be there picking you up,” he sang. “You can lean on me any time, baby, for anything you want and need. Yeah, see, I don’t need any reason, memory, or a season. Every day I will believe that you and I are meant to be. You’re my forever love.”

An audience member says the star’s emotional state was the talk of the show. “Robin appeared to be crying during and after his performance,”

After the performance, which saw illuminated graphics of Paula’s name swirl in the background, host Chris Rock lightened the mood with a quip about the singer’s endless apology performances. “He’s singing like she don’t know him,” the comedian joked. “I miss the other song, the one that sounded like Marvin Gaye.” (A source said the joke was “supposed to be much meaner and it was toned down.”)

For her part, Patton has not responded to any of Thicke’s very public declarations of love. The actress even danced to her former partner’s hit song”Blurred Lines” at a pre-Oscars party in March without appearing to feel awkward.

Been keepin him a secret cause sometimes I’m weird like that. It’s taken some time to be ready for this next step and loving again.”

“There will never be anyone like Floyd,” she continued. “There was a bond that was so deep it’s irreplaceable but that’s not what I am trying to do. Never will I replace Floyd and that’s something I had to take time to understand. We had a very special memorial service for Floyd and I felt my angel Floydy give Emu his blessing. I prayed to Floyd to just give him a touch of his awesomeness, and he has.”
