The galaxy isn’t the only thing Zoe Saldana’s guarding these days. During an appearance on Watch What Happens Live on Thursday, July 31, the pregnant actress was asked by a caller about her former Crossroads costar Britney Spears, and the recent auto-tune controversy over her song “Alien.” Saldana, 36, immediately jumped to Spears’ defense, praising her “good energy” and “humble” attitude.
“I’m pretty sure that 80 percent of our musical artists would be mortified if they were caught singing without auto-tune,” the Guardians of the Galaxy star said, noting that it was “mean” of someone to release Spears’ raw vocals.
“I have a huge amount of respect for Britney Spears,” Saldana continued. “And I’ve always said this, and I will always continue to say it: She was the one big, big celebrity that I met when I was starting to work in Hollywood who was humble, and whatever was going on in her mind or in her world, it was never about hating her neighbor.”
The Avatar actress continued: “She was the only pop star at that time — and I can name a lot of prominent figures right now that today are more famous than Britney that literally got to where they’re at by hating on Britney a lot. Because it was cool at one time to really just diss her. And Britney never did that.”
She concluded: “I do believe that people and children gravitate to good energy, and she’s definitely an abundance of that.”
Saldana and Spears, 32, co starred together in 2002’s coming-of-age movie Crossroads, as ex-best friends who reconnect on a cross-country road trip after their high school graduation. Saldana was actually asked about the singer on WWHL last December, too, when host Andy Cohen grilled her about the film.
She said at the time that she hadn’t spoken to Spears in years, but politely rated her acting as “very good.” Pressed to be more specific, she replied, “On a scale of 1 to 10, 10 being super fabulous? Um, I would say a six? A seven? Eight-ish?”
